Differential geometry and mathematical physics
The interaction between the subjects of mathematics and physics has been of central importance in the development of both fields. The work of Newton led to the development of calculus. The work of Gauss, Riemann, Hilbert and Minkowski was of central importance in enabling the development of modern physical theories such as quantum mechanics and general relativity.
